The Tiles & The Turf: Why Mahjong and Golf are a Perfect Match

If you’re a woman approaching (gasp) middle age, it’s no secret that Mahjong is sweeping the nation as the ultimate social pastime. We’ve recently added Mahjong classes to our studio offerings, and what we’ve discovered is that the clack of the tiles and the click of a well-struck shot are not so dissimilar.

Here is why the transition from the table to the tee is so natural:

The Social Club Aspect

Each game is built for four. Whether you are gathered around a table or a tee box, the ritual begins the same way: "table talk." That initial chatter is how we settle the nerves and reconnect. At the Cottage, we believe golf is a social ritual. Like the rhythmic clack of Mahjong tiles, a good day on the course is defined by the company you keep as much as the score you post. Whether you play to win or show up for the connection, you belong here.

The Technical Integrity

Let’s be honest: both games have a steep learning curve that can feel intimidating. They both speak a "secret language" with rules that feel like a puzzle. Pungs, dragons, and bams? Flops, draws, and pitches? Neither can be mastered in a single afternoon. They both require an appreciation for the process—building a hand, or a swing, piece by piece.

The High-EQ Mental Game

In Mahjong, if you get too outcome-oriented—obsessing over one specific hand—you miss what the table is actually giving you. In golf, if you obsess over the scorecard, you lose your flow. Both games reward the player who can stay present. Our High-EQ coaching is about teaching you to read the "table" of the golf course without losing your cool.

The Ritual of the Wrap-Up

Ultimately, both games are about the Social Club experience. It’s the drinks, the laughter, and the post-game analysis that happen once the tiles are put away or the 18th hole is finished.

Finding Your Magic

There is a reason why so many golfers find themselves at the Mahjong table. Both games demand a rare blend of tactical discipline and social grace. You are building something—a hand of tiles or a sequence of shots—out of thin air.

At the Cottage, we teach you to find your Greenside Magic in the same way you find that one missing tile: with patience, structure, and a bit of intuition.
